About the Sugarhouse

The Scott Farm Sugarhouse was built nearly 100 years ago and until the 1960s produced maple syrup every spring. According to the National Register of Historic Places, Scott Farm was one of the first farms to offer mail orders and shipped its apples and maple syrup nationwide until the Second World War.

Maple sugaring was for centuries a staple of farm life in northern New England. Many of these simple, rustic buildings have been lost to fire or neglect. The Scott Farm Sugarhouse is a fortunate survivor, its design suited perfectly to the boiling of maple sap: long and narrow to accommodate the evaporator and high ceilings with a monitor roof to allow the escape of steam. This space has been comfortably converted to living space for two.

A radiant floor heating system augmented by a gas-log fireplace will keep visitors snug and warm. The bedroom was once the storehouse for sap buckets and other sugaring equipment. The attached woodshed encloses a screened porch for summer comfort and a modern bathroom. The space once used for loading the firebox contains a well-equipped kitchen.
