Golf and Landmark
. . .(T)he New England rustics watched us from afar, wondering what on earth we were at." So wrote Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about his golfing exploits with Rudyard Kipling in the Naulakha meadow. Kipling so enjoyed golf that he played year round. Indeed, the United States Golf Association credits him as the inventor of snow golf which consisted of cutting holes in the snow, painting the balls red, and playing over crusty snow.
The Naulakha meadow is available for the real history buff golfers, but Landmark visitors who desire a more conventional game of golf are well served in Brattleboro which offers a nice variety of golf courses beginning with its own Brattleboro County Club (802-257-7380). The club is an 18 hole course that follows the natural contours of the rolling hilltops, less than 5 miles from Naulakha, the Dutton Farmhouse, and the Sugarhouse. The facilities include a driving range, practice area and a full serve restaurant.
Just across the Connecticut River are two golf courses worth visiting. Bretwood Golf Course in Keene (603-352-7626) offers a well maintained layout along the Ashuelot River with challenging shots into well guarded greens. Hooper Golf Club (603 756 4080) is located in Walpole and is a nine hole course offering great views back to the hills of southern Vermont. You will receive a warm welcome here and when you just have a couple of hours to play a round this is the course for you.
The Amos Brown House is also close to good golfing. The Mount Snow Valley Region is the base to a variety of year-round outdoor recreation activities, including some of the areas best golf courses. The Mount Snow Golf Course (802 464 4254) has matured into one of Vermonts premier mountain courses, and was recently rated one of the top 10 resort courses in the United States by Ski Magazine. The Haystack Golf Course (802 464 8301) will challenge your golfing skills while providing unmatched views of the Green Mountains.
Tomorrow I hope to golf. Ah me! Those who have not seen me golf have indeed missed the Delight of the Age!, wrote Rudyard Kipling to his children.
And what a delight to return to a Landmark after a day of golfing in the mountains of Vermont.
